In my own classroom, I implement many of the strategies learned through my graduate work. I encourage students to share their writing. In the above photo the students are sharing a comparison we wrote about between 2 different books. They wrote about which one they liked better and why. In the middle photo, a student is practicing their letters and sounds with a technology device. I use Ipads and a Kindle in my classroom to support diverse learners. Also, in the 3rd photo, the students are "Reading to Someone" for Daily 5 literacy time. This is one of the favorites among the students each day. It encourages all learners to read and to enjoy sharing with a friend. They also ask each other comprehension questions after reading as well.
In my ECI Theories class, I was able to start thinking about my reading strategies related to the new Common Core standards. I had to create a video of my students and show how we used nonfiction texts with the standards and provided scaffolding with the students. We also focused on questioning and going back into the text to find our answers. Creating this video gave me a chance to reflect on my reading group time and how to make it more effective. It also helped me learn strategies of teaching the students how to nonfiction texts and how to go back and find answers.
I created a video to share with parents and teachers of how to assess an early literacy skill: Concepts of Print with a student. Creating tools like videos for diverse families could be an invaluable tool to use to share what goals students will need to master in kindergarten.
