"In 2005, more than 190 million people lived in a country they were not born in."
I created a website based on how I use global learning in my kindergarten classroom. I used an example of when we studied the celebrations around the community in December. We did a two week study of seven different countries and their unique cultural celebrations with their families. The celebrations we study are Christmas, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, Diwali, and Las Posadas. I use music, books, and video to introduce the students to new cultures. The below song is from Chinese New Year that I play while the kids are creating their masks for their celebration books.
Here is an example of one the pages we complete for our Celebration book.
I've also learned that incorporating diverse literature is also key to reading skills for children. In my own classroom, we have read many books that share different cultures and backgrounds. I bring out the globe or show the kids on Google Earth website where the countries are located. This gives kids a better sense of the world around them.
